3rd gen Intels are great for games...i5 3570 for example,i would look for this cpu on your place,great choice and not so expensive.
your cpu is still ok,but besides of things like power consumption and lower working temp,is definetly not so good as newer 3rd gen od cpu-s.

Beacuse of nature of your job,pick a good SSD...that will boost your pc speed more than a better cpu.
Btw.are you considered to pick a new Haswell?ofcourse then you will need new motherboard.
Even,Haswells are better mostly in gpu.
