my ping

I don´t know where this topic should be posted, so I´ll try it here to xD

my ping has been around 200-300 for the last few days, can't seem to fix it. i tried snaps 40, didn't work. I tried changing stuff in the options, didn't work.

only thing I didnt do yet is resetting my wifi, but I don't thínk that's the problem. anyway, i'm unable to play, cause my screen freezes every second. my ping is usually around 300, with spikes up to 970. lowest was 69. Idk how this happend, but it's ruining my gaming. It's not my laptop, since I can play the singleplayer plus cod 1 multiplayer without any problems.


does anyone know what the hell is going on?

if i was in ur shoes i´d skip the wifi and use cable (even though the problem isn´t solved by skipping the wifi, it´s always the better option).

You can try your ping via http://pingtest.net/ (try a UK server like DH one). Maybe the problem is not the game but your ISP.

i have got this problem before because of downloading too many things,,,are you downloading something?,,,you must reset your router to solve this.

@jeebus, The link that you posted is a topic which I myself created so yeah, I tried all of those.

I can't switch to cable, since my parents will NEVER agree to that. And I'm only 16, means I have to survive for atleast 2 more years before I can move out xD

@invisible, I'm not downloading anything. As a matter of fact, I got nothing else running except Xfire and TS 3. so there's no such thing as downloading that creates my lagg.

I expierenced a high ping at cod 1 last night, means it's not only cod_uo. I guess it indeedly is my Wifi, since it randomly fails a couple times a day. I'll reset my router as soon as I arrive at home, I'm still at school.

when i wrote "cable", i meant that u could hook up ur laptop with a rj45 and thus, skip wifi.

yes. it´s called PLC.

if it´s in the basement it probablt is a long way from ur computer so using RJ45 could be a problem. then PLC could be a good solution. u can probably buy it from the same place u bought ur internet. but remember if u live in a "new" house where u use overcurrent protection (not really sure about the english term) u could experience some problems using PLC.

well, I would like to try so, but I dont know if my parents will agree. I'll ask it in the next couple days. weird thing is the fact that I never had such lagg. My ping won't gow lower than 103. Had 39 yesterday, which made me lagg badly to. re-installing cod didn't work, nor did resetting the router. I never had this problem before, so i'm in a big cloud of what the f***..

But all together, I still can play on cod 1 without any sign of lagg. idk how..

ok. this might be a bit over the top and is more from a network point of view, but this might atleast show where the problem is. in ur own network, ur isp:s network or somewhere else along the way from ur computer to the |DH| server:

1.open the command prompt. u can select it from the programs menu or just type cmd and hit enter in the start menu after clicking the windows icon in to lower left part of ur screen (i imagine u use windows?)

2.type: tracert 109.70.148.18 and hit enter (this means traceroute to our server)

3.wait a moment and then u´ll see a list of ms (=ping) from each jump along the way. u probably will see low ping jumps in the beginning of the list (this is in ur own network and ur ips:s network) and a little higher ones when u get to other countries on ur way from ur computer.

the ones with the highest ping jumps = ur problem. if ur "lucky", u´ll see big pings in the beginning of the list. this means ur problem is in ur own network (wifi, router, whatever/wherever the problem is) and should be fixable.

in the worst case scenario u see the highest ping differences lower down on the list wich means the traffic (in ur own ips:s network or abroad) isn´t taking a good route for u to the end destination. u can´t do anything about these unless ur isp is willing to reroute their traffic for a lonely teenage cod player =)

if i explained this badly or u don´t understand what i mean. follow steps 1 and 2 and write down the list (atleast the ms/pings) here and we´ll check it out.

well I followed your steps, and it only works at the first hop

this is what is shown:

94 ms 26 ms 69 ms and this IP : 172.21.191.254

when it starts at the next hop, it keeps saying time out.

it does that for all the other 29 hops, so I don't know if that's alright or not?

but atleast, those pings are shown, 94 ms, 26 ms, and 69 ms.

172.21.191.254 seems to be the router u are using at home. it always checks the ping 3 times. the first time it checked it it was 94ms, the second time 26ms and the third time 69ms. these all pretty much suck =) well, ok, using wifi and getting 26ms is quite ok but the rest are a no no. imagine u have a 94ms ping and then add on all the others that comes on ur way to the server and voila, ur ping is so crappy u can´t even play.

1. this shows that there is a good chance that the problem for ur ping spikes at the server are due to the fact that ur connection between the comp and the router sux. connect it with a data cable (RJ45) or move it closer to the router.

2. check again.

it´s not allright that it times out on the rest of the hops. are u sure that not the second or the third try (read above in red) showed any number? anyway. fix the wifi (preferably change to a non-wifi solution) and u are on the right path!

But i usually game at my room, which is the third floor. the Router is in the basement...so a cable is too short. the connection could indeed be a problem. I'll try moving my laptop around the house, to see if my ping changes. But, where do I get such cable, howmuch are they, and how do I "install" them? :$

hehe. ok. my fault. should have mentioned that u MUST do this at home. what u´ve just done is check the ping/route from ur school to the DH server, but what u want to know is what´s happening between ur home and the DH server. ur school probably have these kinds of gamingservices blocked so that´s why u didn´t get it to work =)

here is a pick showing the cable and how it´s connected to the router. u have a similar hole in ur laptop.

and here is a pick of just the cable. it costs under 1 €/meter.

an easy way to do this is to do the tracert command first (at HOME!) and the move ur comp closer to the basement/router and check it again. u´ll probably see some differences. the odd thing is that u have always played using wifi and now suddenly it doesn´t work anymore. even though nothing has changed. but let´s take that diskussion when u have tested it at home first.

well jeebus, this is what happend when I ran the scan at home. I'm in the living room right now, that's where i've ran the scan.

just came back from a work thing so couldn´t answer u sooner.

ur problem is not connection related (talking about ur internet connection). ur ping looks great. so this means ur isp hasn´t done any changes to f*ck things up for u. the rest of the route to the server is also good. the problem, as u can see, probably lies in the first hop. from ur comp to ur router. just as an example, i´ve got under 1ms in all three tries. u can try this tracert command a couple of times and see if one (or more) of the tests in the first hop goes higher than the others. imagine u playing at our server and all of the sudden ur ping goes up with ~100ms. not a good thing. this is what u can see from that ping table u just wrote down.

the solution? in ur shoes i would do just as i think i wrote in the first repost to ur question. skip the wifi or atleast try to reduce the distance between the comp and the router. move around trying tracert and u´ll sooner or later find a sweetspot. this can also be noticed in the same place u can see ur wifi signalstrength on ur comp. basically same thing.

u wouldn´t play cod with a wireless mouse and keyboard either (cuz that causes a delay from the movement of the mouse/keyboard until ur cod character reacts to it) and the same rules apply for ur internet connection. atleast for pro players =)

i play on a laptop, so keyboard is already on it and I got a wired mouse.

well, I'll run some more scans, I'll post the resuls later on. But I usually game at my room or at the first floor. the sweetest spot would be right next to the router - in the basement..

second of all, there's something wrong with my sound to. When I play on cod 1 it functions perfect. but when I start cod_uo it's not loud at all. I have to put my laptop volume on max, just to hear a little bit. this can be helped by using my headset, but even though I got the same problem there. there's something wrong with my cod_uo. But idk what...

about the sound problem: have u checked the ingame volume settings?

i did check that, but it´s on its max. I use high qualiy, but idk what to put in the sound director. even though, it´s normal on cod 1, but bugged on cod_uo.

I seriously have no clue what this is..
